The Growing Need for Speciality Coatings on Elastomeric Components

India has emerged as a prominent manufacturing hub for rubber components, seals, and O-rings, and manufacturers are increasingly moving into demanding applications in the automotive, aerospace, defence, medical, industrial, and engineering sectors.

The surface of the component can become equally important.

This is where speciality coating technologies are beginning to play an increasingly important role.

Recently, a customer approached us with a requirement for a speciality coating on O-rings to improve ease of insertion during assembly.

That conversation once again highlighted an opportunity—and also a challenge—within our industry.

What can speciality coatings achieve?

Depending on the application, an appropriate coating or surface treatment can provide:

• Lower coefficient of friction
• Easier insertion and assembly
• Improved release properties
• Reduced stick-slip
• Better wear resistance
• Improved chemical and environmental resistance
• Protection of the elastomer surface
• Reduced dependence on conventional oils and greases
• Improved cleanliness in critical applications
• Better and more consistent assembly performance

There is no single coating that can address all these requirements.

The appropriate technology may involve PTFE and fluoropolymer-based coatings, Parylene, MoS₂, graphite-based systems, silicone-based coatings or other specialised dry-film and surface-treatment technologies, depending on the substrate, application and performance requirement.

The real challenge is not the coating—it is the process.

Choosing a coating is only the beginning.

The success of a speciality coating application depends on several factors:

Substrate → Surface preparation → Coating chemistry → Application method → Coating thickness → Curing/deposition → Handling → Inspection → Validation

A coating that performs exceptionally well on one rubber compound may not necessarily perform in the same way on another.

Similarly, a coating suitable for a static seal may not be appropriate for a dynamic sealing application.

Understanding these relationships is critical.

Why are opportunities sometimes missed in India?

Despite India's enormous rubber-component manufacturing capability, access to speciality coating knowledge, application technology and suitable machinery remains relatively limited.

Many manufacturers know that their customer is asking for:

"Low friction."
"Easy insertion."
"Dry lubrication."
"No grease."
"Improved release."
"Better wear resistance."

But converting that requirement into the right coating technology and a repeatable industrial process is where the real engineering challenge lies.

In some cases, lack of knowledge or access to the appropriate process technology can result in the opportunity moving outside India.

We believe this should change.

At Summit Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd., we have spent the last three years in R&D developing speciality coating processes and machinery for industrial applications.

Today, we have more than 50 speciality coating machines operating in the Indian and German markets.
